Q&A with Maire - Steering Committee Secretary
Professional Background
- Can you describe your career journey and what led you to your current position?
While it has seen many iterations, the through line of my career has revolved around education and supporting students with achieving their goals. My career started at the University of Maine, with attaining my Bachelor’s in Art Education in 2017, working in the classroom from 2017-2022, and then attaining my Masters in Education in 2023. I have worked with a wide spectrum of students, varying from pre-school aged up to adulthood. I left the classroom in 2022 for my current role as a College Savings Counselor for the Finance Authority of Maine. At FAME I work with families to support them with meeting their education savings goals for themselves or their loved ones. This role has also allowed me to pursue alternative education methods to support adults with financial literacy, such as leading workshops and an annual financial book club. Starting out as an art teacher and then transitioning to financial education was a 180 for me, but it allowed me to grow personally and as an educator and I enjoy bringing my unique perspective to the work I that I do to support Maine people.
Involvement with KV Connect
- What do you think is the biggest benefit of being involved with KV Connect?
Being involved in KV Connect has allowed me to stay in tuned to what is going on in my community, especially the wonderful opportunities Waterville provides for young people. There is always something fun to do in the area and I typically find out about it through KV Connect.
Personal Connection & Local Pride
- How do you stay engaged in the community outside of work?
I am an artist and really appreciate the thriving arts community right here in Waterville. I love to visit the Schupf Center in my free time, checking out a movie at the Maine Film Center or visiting what their gallery has on display. I also collaborate with small businesses in the area to offer unique experiences such as paint and sips.
Personal Fun & Interests
- What was your first job, and what did you learn from it?
My first job was at Hannaford Supermarket, where I started as a bagger but transitioned to cake decorator! Such a fun, fast-paced job. A job where you are juggling the “fun stuff” with many other responsibilities, and time management is crucial. I picked up so many creative skills there that I still use whenever a loved one has a birthday or another special occasion.
Advice & Inspiration
- What advice would you give to other young professionals starting out in their careers?
Always be open to trying something new! Being young means to be “green” in your profession as well as many other areas of life. It is a period of life where such rapid learning and growth can take place. Trying things outside your comfort zone creates opportunities to stretch yourself and grow in so many ways.
